The formal study of economics began when Adam Smith (1723–1790) published his famous book The Wealth of Nations in 1776. Many authors had written on economics in the centuries before Smith, but he was the first to address the subject in a comprehensive way.Behavioral economics has profoundly changed labor economics in various areas (e.g., intertemporal labor supply, the wage–effort relationship, the role of fairness norms in wage determination) and stimulated new lines of research (e.g., on the psychology of incentives, social comparison, and peer effects).

Scope. Founded in 1983 as the first journal devoted specifically to labor economics, the Journal of Labor Economics (JOLE) presents international research on issues affecting social and private behavior, and the economy.
